There are many different software programs for managing and processing images. The best known (and most expensive) is Adobe Photoshop which offers an astonishing array of tools, however it has no built-in database or catalogue and its complexity goes far beyond what the average user might need. Adobe Lightroom offers comprehensive image processing tools but to this they add cataloguing with its own built-in database to enable you to find your images quickly and efficiently. The software is relatively inexpensive to buy outright and the same licence allows you to use it on Macs or PCs.
Lightroom is an extraordinarily versatile program and can solve most, if not all, of the general image management and digital workflow issues mentioned in the other sections. Its features are too numerous to mention here but they include RAW conversion, image processing, captioning & keywording, slideshows, web galleries, print templates - even book publishing.
Of course it's most unlikely that you will need all these features but I believe that if you are involved with image-making you will benefit from using some of them, and more than you might have imagined.
